O Pão de Açúcar Hotel inserido num belíssimo edifício com início de construção em 1 de Setembro de 1939 e concluído em 1945 pelo Engenheiro Ferreira dos Santos, abre oficialmente as suas portas em 15 de Agosto de 1953.Anteriormente à sua abertura e em plena década de 40 do século passado o edifício estava afecto a uma casa de repouso de idosos no 6º Piso sendo os restantes pisos destinados ao Sindicato da Caixa Têxtil corporativo. Relativamente à escadaria interior, verdadeiro ex-líbris do design interior do edifício, atribui-se a sua autoria ao reputado Arquitecto Germano Castro Pinheiro, o qual teve a ousadia de criar, na época um modelo verdadeiramente atípico nas tendências do Art-Deco Liberty.A escadaria em caracol, verdadeiro ponto de atracção do Hotel, é nos dias de hoje objecto de atenção por parte de inúmeros arquitectos internacionais e nacionais que não hesitam em qualificar esta verdadeira obra de arte, segundo o conceito de Spiral Staircase.
